Museum of Sex exhibits erotica by Annie Sprinkle, Candida Royalle

Rites of Passion
For Immediate Release:

SAN FRANCISCO — Pink and White Productions announces a special curation of Candida Royalle’s Rites of Passion (1987). The exhibit features a clip from the film, titled “IN SEARCH OF THE ULTIMATE SEXUAL EXPERIENCE” directed by Annie Sprinkle. The work will be exhibited as part of “Higher Love: The Psychedelic Roots of Modern Sexuality” at the Museum of Sex in New York.

In the video, Annie Sprinkle shares the story of a woman whose search for fulfillment leads her through wild sexual adventures. She discovers ancient lovemaking secrets brought to her by a mysterious adonis-like ‘master.’ An auto-biographical tongue-in-cheek journey, the story features Jeanna Fine as a jaded woman who finds fulfillment when hunky guru David Israel Sandler shows her the joys of Tantric sex.

Higher Love: The Psychedelic Roots of Modern Sexuality in New York

Sex and psychedelics have consistently been drawn together in Anglo-American and European culture since the acid-dropping experiments of therapists and sexual revolutionaries in the 1950s and 60s. They are hailed as augmenters of experience, therapeutic tools, and even erotic interlocutors.

From the counterculture call to “turn on and tune in,” to the quest of the modern “psychonaut” for self-realization, psychoactive substances have been understood to transform body and mind. The drugs we now refer to as psychedelics have much more varied and complex historical intersections with sexuality than the standard story of Western sexual liberation might lead us to believe.

The exhibition draws on hidden histories and marginalized stories, oftentimes women, illustrate how our understanding of sexuality in the 21st century has been transformed by the “altered states” brought about and inspired by psychedelic substances. In the wake of a major resurgence of psychedelic research, which has informed the loosening of legal prohibitions on psychedelics and an uptake in use, the time has come to tell new stories about the psychedelic future of sex.
