Dyke Porn and Trans Porn, in Bed Together
Queer pornographers Shine Louise Houston of Pink & White Productions and
Ken Rowe of Trannywood Pictures find common ground for progressive porn
SAN FRANCISCO – (June 1, 2008): San Francisco based queer pornographers Shine Louise Houston and Ken Rowe have a queer relationship to each other. Shine directs Pink & White Productions, a dyke/queer porn company with a mission to create high quality queer cinema that represents authentic queer sexuality through blurred gender lines. Its cast is mostly comprised of lesbian/dyke identifying women, though that has never been the sole identity of the company. For Shine, gender fluidity is a key component of authentic queer porn.
This message fits like hand in glove for Ken Rowe, one of the founders of Trannywood Pictures. A gay male porn company that promotes sexual health and safety through hot educational films about consent, communication, and safer sex practices, Trannywood’s performers are male – identified, both biological and transsexual men comprise the cast. Many even have performed with Pink & White Productions, and both companies often find themselves sitting side by side in panels, just as their DVDs sit side by side on the shelves of queer video stores and sex toy retailers.
Though the companies vary in design and aesthetic choices (Shine’s degree in film is evident in her work, while Ken’s experience is primarily as a community activist and gay sex club owner) the companies share trans identified cast members and strong community-driven pornographic ethics which make them compatible (and consensual) bedfellows. Shine’s work has even been described by sex experts Violet Blue, Audacia Ray, and most recently Tristan Taormino in the Village Voice as dyke porn that’s more aligned with gay male pornography than with the “Lesbian” genre.
What makes this porn “Queer” and the Girl/Girl films “Straight”, is an unapologetic passion on screen that manifests itself in ways that might shock the smut customer looking for soft lesbian loving. The performers are raw, intense, and not the average beauty you’d find on a mainstream box cover. That this kind of sex is available on DVD is empowering for queers, particularly queers of color, and a refreshing change for porn aficionados.
Armed with the social markings of San Francisco’s young LBGT demographic – from post-op scars to tattoos, the talented casts have sex the way they want to have it, frequently with their real life partner. Add multiple cameras, lighting, and professional editing to the list and Pink & White Productions has made an accredited name for itself and queer porn.
Trannywood has emerged as the bearer of the trans fag mantel, shaped by the films of Christopher Lee and Morty Diamond. The guys behind Trannywood generally work at or frequent gay clubs and have developed a no nonsense safe sex ethic. You’ll find guys in various points in their transition, but also guys who don’t want or plan on being on hormones or don’t want any surgery, as well as those who do. Trannywood Pictures have diverse men with diverse body types including non trans guys.
June marks the 1st anniversary of Pink & White’s CrashPadSeries.com, a one-of-a-kind adult paysite where new cast converge and an exciting language of queer cinematography develops. Next on their plate, Shine is directing the company’s highly-anticipated fourth feature film, Champion, an explicit love story about two MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters. With the competitive world of female fighting as a backdrop, the narrative porn promises to be another spectacular conquest from the award-winning director.
Later this Summer, Trannywood Pictures releases Couch Surfers 2, the follow up to their second film, now focusing on couples rather than the group sex that Couch Surfers is known for. In production is also the long awaited Trannywood Gone Wild, which viewers got a hint at on the bonus disc of Couch Surfers. The guys behind Trannywood Pictures are also in development of a line of films that reverse the ratio of trans and non trans guys, called Mangrunt Films, which hopes to further normalize trans male sex in gay porn.

“There is power in creating images, and for a woman of color and a queer to take that power… I don’t find it exploitative; I think it’s necessary.”
