In one of my earliest Open Source Sex columns, I introduced you to local, queer, women-run porn company Pink and White Productions, who were primed like evil gay masterminds to conquer the world with their superlative films. Since then, director Shine Louise Houston wasn’t exactly stroking a white fluffy cat while hot boi minions programmed the dyke robot army with the gay (porn) agenda that keeps the red states blushing. She’s actually been raking in the film awards. But in her newest film, “Champion: Love Hurts” she’s outdone herself, and porn: we see the vision of mainstream indie cinema combine with explicit, authentic queer porn to merge with an integrity and fierceness that makes straight porn look… as exciting as watching lube dry.

I watch a lot of porn for my job, and I can tell you no one — no one — is doing what Houston has with a porn film like “Champion”. It’s a film about fighting, feeling, and, of course, f–ing. Syd Blakovich (sydblakovich.com, site not work safe) portrays Jessie Eaton, a cold, womanizing MMA fighter (Mixed Martial Arts, also known as “Cage Fighting”) who’s never lost a round in the ring. But her life outside the ring implodes when a series of events show her she’s lost the ability to tell the difference between being a must-win fight machine (and f– machine), and the vital connection of sex — with love.

The film is packed with hot, raging queer sex and scorching, authentic orgasms — the heart-pounding scene with Madison Young and thigh-clenching solo by Jiz Lee (jizlee.com, images within site not safe for work) are unforgettable — and it’s also filled with intense fight scenes. Big strap-ons, and flying fists. Blakovich’s real-life lover Jiz Lee plays Cathy Summers, the girl in love with the fighter whose heart is on the line, adding a twist of serious heat to the deep sex scenes they share. Meanwhile, Blakovich’s promoter insists that Blakovich look and act “less gay” — even forcing the butch fighter to do a photo shoot in a dress, makeup and heels to try and win mainstream acceptance, twisted by the threat of a thrown fight at the film’s apex.

Sound complex for a porno? You don’t know that half of it: as it turns out, I had a moment to chat with Blakovich about her real life, where she’s a world-touring champion cage fighter (and lesbian/genderqueer porn star). She told me that being told to look and act “less gay” isn’t just a plot point, explaining “In my own fighting career, I was initially asked by my manager to keep the queer porn under wraps because a lot of the MMA circuit is run by pretty conservative and homophobic people, but we both soon realized that in this day in age with the internet that really isn’t possible. So now, I am pretty out about it all.”

Blakovich started fighting professional MMA about a year ago. She trained previously in Muay Thai kickboxing for four years, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for one year, before being approached by her current trainer about fighting professionally on an all-female card down in L.A. She told me, “I got three days notice and had to decide quick. I thought what the hell, this is probably the best and quickest way to find out if this is what I want to be doing so I took the fight. I am a worse case scenario type of person, so if I can think of what is the worst case and am OK with it, then I am willing to try it. In this case, getting knocked out or having one of my limbs/joints broken was what I came up with, but I was able to accept that could be a consequence for this, and thus I was able to step in the ring with one of the fiercest female black belts out of Gracie Barra. Since then, I have fought in Oklahoma, Tokyo, and a trip to New Zealand, which was made into a 2-hour documentary, set for release this year.”

Since Blakovich identifies as “hapa,” the abridged definition of that is Asian descent, mixed-race, and is American, I was extra curious to hear about how her Japanese match went. She told me, “The girl I fought had amazing stand-up, was a two-time national champion in Japan and was only 19. It was the first time I had ever been kneed in the face full blast and I really hope it will be the last. I came home with a concussion and a broken foot (which apparently I had before the fight).”

But there’s fighting, and then there’s f–ing, and then there’s combining the two under the banner of queer cinema. For everyone involved, “Champion” sounds like it was much more than Pink and White’s usual hot porn or the popular online spin-off, The Crash Pad Series (which is all sex and no plot).

Blakovich said, “Shooting “Champion” — I had literally just gotten back from my New Zealand fight and jumped straight into the two-week production. A really good friend of mine and training partner actually helped choreograph the fight scenes in “Champion” and worked a little with my co-star Dallas, who had never fought before. I actually got more beat up shooting the fight scenes for the movie than I did during my New Zealand fight. As far as a favorite scene… I love getting to work with my real life partner Jiz Lee and I think it really shows. I also had the wonderful opportunity to work with Madison Young for the first time. Shortly after our scene together, she booked me to perform for her porn company in several films, which have all been fantastic. Needless to say, it was dynamic; you’ll have to see the movie. Aside from it being a phenomenally produced, beautiful piece of queer, independent, adult cinema, it is really great to be involved in a project that tells a story about gender and sexual politics in the realm of professional athletics and entertainment. It also has really hot sex!”

For the film’s director Shine Louise Houston, it’s about the hot sex — and the power of women showing it in porn. She states, “There is power in creating images, and for… a woman of color and a queer to take that power… I don’t find it exploitative; I think it’s necessary.” Meanwhile, at the end of our interview Syd tells me, “Urgh, should go to bed and get beauty sleep since I am going to get gang banged by Princess Donna tomorrow for Wiredpussy.com. But as far as fight clubs go, I am pretty blessed to be able to train with a team of women that is also managed and trained by women. It’s mixed. We all come from different backgrounds, belief systems, orientations and it’s completely wonderful to get to be a part of this group of kick ass women.”

But we all know the first rule about Queer F– Club. Right?
